We bring out a professional stump grinder — a machine with a rotating cutting wheel that chips the wood down a layer at a time. The stump and the visible roots radiating from it get ground down 4 to 12 inches below the surrounding soil level (you tell us how deep based on what you want to do with the spot afterward).
When we're finished:
- The stump is below grade — you won't see it
- The grindings can be left in place as mulch, or hauled off
- The hole can be filled with soil so grass can grow over the spot
What about the roots?
For most homeowners, grinding the visible surface roots and the stump itself is enough — the remaining underground roots will naturally decay over time.
